Is your Facebook account in a REAL NAME? Social Media Identity Crisis

Most of the social media platforms don’t require to use Real name, and the users are free to use any made-up names or even play a role of imaginated character.

When you use your real name on social media, it is likely to have more communication with REAL friends, and existing relationship you have in real life. However, if you use any fake name, or play a role in a different character, it is more likely to build a virtual relationship, and then the social media account in fake name becomes totally a VIRTUAL SPACE.

There used to be some websites requires to use a real name, so that the users had to identify themselves when register. However, the main social media platforms thesedays such as YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram don’t require much information on register and it is commonly seen some role-playing accounts.

It is not that problem to have more than 2 accounts in a different name. But if you continue keep use multi-accounts in different names, your identity could possibly get self-disunion, which means, you might have multiplex identity.

Many professionals proved that the virtual space, (social networking especially) causes identity crisis. There could be much difference between ‘you’ on Facebook account, and your real character. BUT, imagine if you have multi-accounts in different name. This will result a serious identity crisis.

If social media forces to use real name, it would decrease possibilities of identity crisis, but still even in a real name, if you don’t reflect yourself truly on social media, still identity crisis could happen.

Quotation about Social Media Addiction and Identity Crisis

Quotation about Social Media Addiction and Idenity Crisis

by Baroness Greenfield, a professor of pharmacology at Oxford University

“Facebook and Twitter have created a generation obsesed with themselves, who have short attention spans and a childlike desire for constant feedback on their lives”

“What concerns me is the banality of so much that goes out on Twitter. Why should someone be interested in what someone else has had for breakfast?”

“It reminds me of a small child (saying): ‘Look at me Mummy, I’m doing this’, ‘Look at me Mummy I’m doing that’. It is almost as if they are in some kind of identity crisis. In a sense it’s keeping the brain in a sort of time warp.”

“It’s almost as if people are living in a world that’s not a real world, but a world where what counts is what people think of you or (if they) can click on you,”

“Think of the implications for society if people worry more about what other people think about them than what they think about themselves.”

Attention Seekers on Facebook

It is visble that some posts are actually intending to get attention from many of their friends, and followers.

These are the examples of attention seeking on Facebook

Those people who are obsessed with number of likes/followers are most likely to be an attention seeker on social media which they are actively using. It is sometimes too visible that they want attention, and they are throwing a curious sentence on their post, trying to get more comments.

Why would they want more attention on their Facebook/Twitter, not in a real life?

They really need to realize it is better to invest their real life, instead of attention seeking on social media

Do you find it hard to ‘LOG-OUT’? #SocialMediaAddiction

MPiRe-social-media-addiction

Not only Facebook, but including all other social networking services like Twitter and Instagram. People in nowadays are obviously logged on their social media all the time, even while they’re not active on it. They can get notifications from their phone in real-time, some habitually pop up the social media window when they are using Internet.

If you find it difficult to Logout, you might be addicted to social media.

Honestly, there is no necessity to force logging out, but if you feel hard to click on ‘logout’ when you are suggested to do so, that means you might be obsessed in social media.

It is recommended to log out social media when you are not active on it, such as class time and work time.

If logging out within those times is difficult for you, then it means you might be already addicted to it.

‘TweetBeat’ by Applebee’s LifeIsBetterShared

ARE YOU SERIOUSLY spending your time trying to figure out how to squeeze your thoughts in 140 characters? … Go out and get the whole story !

from ‘TweetBeat’ by Applebee’s LifeIsBetterShared

The interesting format of Twitter is that the tweets(writing of thoughts) must be within 140characters, it can’t go over than that.

The intention for this word limit on Twitter is to lead users to record their thoughts simply even a little things. Short word limit also allows to point out the only important say.

Applebee’s LifeIsBetterShared had runned an online video campaign about social media addiction, and ‘TweetBeat’ is one of those targetting who is too obsessed by using Twitter. Not only concerning about the word limit but it suggests to go outside and have a whole story instead of spending lots of time on Twitter.

[Test Yourself] 7 Signs of Facebook Addict/ Suggestion for addiction

As there is no standard to decide Social Networking ‘ADDICTION’, and there is no medication, self-testing is the best way to cure and prevent social media addiction.

Here are the 7 signs of Facebook addict

(from: http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/facebook-addiction-signs/ )

1. Over-sharing

2. Checking Facebook whenever possible

3. Overly concerned with Facebook Images

4. Reporting on Facebook

5. Spending Hours browsing on Facebook Everday

6. Mad Rush to Add more Friends

7. Compromising Offline Social Life

It is simply to check whether you are ‘obsessed’ in Facebook activities.

Instead of being obsessed in these 7 activities, I would suggest to;

1. Share information by FACE-TO-FACE conversation with your friends

This will improve your REAL friendship. It’s something very different to the number of followers on social media.

Develop your real friendship with real friends

2. Checking Facebook too often? Overly concerned with Facebook Images? With the time observing images on Facebook, OBSERVE REAL VIEWS OUTSIDE. Much more clear and beautiful, much more 3D than the photos. While watching at the images on Facebook, you might miss the most beautiful scenes outside

3. Facebook could be a record of your life, but it is not a personal diary. Do not report everything on Facebook.

4. Compare to time spending on Social Media, what do you earn in real life?

Friendship? Not really.. in most case, it just seems to be improved only online, not in real life

Do not spend hours browsing on Facebook, do not facebook-stalk unknown people.

Spending free time outside, enjoy outdoor activities, and physically meet your friends or have friendly conversation with family. That’s the useful time-spending which Facebook cannot provide.

Smartphone Addiction while on Transportation: They’re missing the beautiful view of nature

smartphone train

Because I spend at least 2 hours per day on a transport, I often get bored and look around people. It was surprising that most people on the transport were watching at their phones, just like the photo above.

While on the Sydney Harbour Bridge where the bus I get on everyday goes pass, the view of Sydney Opera House is very beautiful. But, guess what people are doing in the bus? Still their eyes are on their phones. It seems like no one is conscious whereabout they are passing. Of course it might be because it is a daily scene for them, they see Opera House everyday, there’s nothing new. But if they didn’t possess mobile phones, I am sure they would’ve looked outside and feel the view out there.

Sydney_harbour_bridge_opera_house(Sydney Opera House, photo taken from Sydney Harbour Bridge, image from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sydney_Opera_House)

Personally, I believe myself as a non-addicted phone user. Sometimes I see very beautiful scenes while on the bus, like rainbow after the rain, Sydney Opera House, City view, etc. It was impressing how other people were only watching at their phone. The time on transport has become time for smartphones, and although we don’t earn much experience from the view out the window, still, so many smartphone users are missing out the beautiful scenes they could observe.

Hope the smarphone lovers/addicts take a moment and look out the window, feel the view outside sometimes.

FACEBOOK depsression: “What’s on Your Mind?” by Shaun Higton

A short film, “What’s on Your Mind?” by Shaun Higton demonstrates the worst case that SNS(Social Networking Service) users can face in the end of its addiction. Facebook asks ‘what’s on your mind?’ on its posting space. But in this short film, a guy named Scott Thomson uploads something that COULD BE in his mind, but is totally fake. He is quite addicted in uploading fake life that is exaggerated, or not even happened in real. He could be an attention seeker, or he must’ve been wanting to avoid his real life. It seems there’s nothing wrong with uploading fakes on social media, it’s just his own space, he could upload whatever he wants to. However, this short film shows how it can bring negative effect to the REAL LIFE, such as his real relationship between woman, and his workplace, etc.

Watch this video to see how Scott Thompson’s fake facebook activity results serious depression in his real life.

A simple way to solve Social Media Addiction

adeefe0fbdf956e99fe97eb419d0fe962b1fd85508e6c7538b0c713185b05e03

Logging out is the simple cure for social media addiction.

How easy is that? It sounds like ‘A way to enroll in Havard Universiy is ‘STUDY’ ”

Well, these are actually true. I would say it is the start point of cure.

There is no such an exact cure of social media addiction, but the starting point of cure is to try to log-out as much frequent as possible.

If you log out, there will be no real-time notification invites you to access to social media. ‘Log Out’ seems nothing pretty much, but there is actually difference.

Agree with this? then try to log out as much as you can.

Disagree with it? Then take an experiment.

Log out is simple but effective
